Set vs. Performance?

All things being equal, which they seldom are, Bow A starts with 3" of "Perry Reflex" & ends up with 2" of set. Bow B starts out straight & ends up with 2" of set.Which bow would perform...

Re: Set vs. Performance?

Bill, bow b would out perform bow a but neither would likely be super performers if performance is your main issue. If talking performance only it starts to fall off at the moment the bow takes a...

Re: Set vs. Performance?

Bill, do you mean bow A has 1" reflex and bow B has 2" deflex. Or do they both have 2" deflex? What is the correct term for the amount which the shape of the bow comes down during tillering ad first...

Re: Set vs. Performance?

I'll defer to Steve because he has done so much work with the chrono. But I have always thought keeping the bow inside the elastic limit had a large influence on it's cast, and was persistant for the...

Re: Set vs. Performance?

Bow A has 5 in of set-in actuality. Much more wood compressed on the belly. Much less cast. Jawgehttp://mysite.verizon.net/georgeandjoni

Re: Set vs. Performance?

Part of the "All things being Equal" is: Both bows are 50# and have the same limb mass.Bow A has taken 5" of set, Bow B 2"Bow A has more than twice the belly compression.Everyone seems to agree that...

Re: Set vs. Performance?

Bill, both of these bows are not equal, something is way different. I don't know the proper name for wood that has been crushed but I know what it feels like and I know how it acts. I have never been...

Re: Set vs. Performance?

If bow limbs have the same mass, the geometry takes over. I would wonder how they could, one having been overworked relative to the other. I wonder which would have the higher hysterisis (the effect...

Re: Set vs. Performance?

I'm trying to visualize what is taking place as a bow takes set. Before set, the surface of the belly stored more energy than 1/4" into the core.Is it fair to say that the wood 1/4" into the core was...

There was a questions earlier in this thread, and I am not sure it has been answered properly. This is how I define set vs. string follow.Every bow can take set, since set for me is the measurement on...

Re: Set vs. Performance?

From Tim Baker's Archery glossary:Set: Permanent deflection of the limbs toward the archer, resulting from compression of belly wood beyond its elastic limit. Set and string follow are not the...

Re: Set vs. Performance?

It seems silly to differentiate between set and string follow. It's just a matter of degree. You could build a laminated bow with some string follow and argue that it has no set, but what is the point?

Re: Set vs. Performance?

I think you missed the point of the differentiate Patrick, but if you didn't I might be the one not understanding your point.A bow that does not stay exactly the same after tillering as before has...

Re: Set vs. Performance?

Stringfollow is not necessarily due to set. It only means the limb tips are behind the back. The stave or glue up could have been in that position before any tillering. Set is crushed belly wood.

Re: Set vs. Performance?

A lot more crushed wood cells in bow A which are not contributing to cast so a lot more wood is just along for the ride.I don't think a bow's performance can be determined just by the location of the...

I see what Steve and Dave are saying, and I think I understand it to a certain, small degree.BBP is setting up a sort of strange situation, though, where limb mass and draw weight are constant for...
